Program Summary
This program is designed for family business leaders and members to explore the unique challenges and opportunities that come with running a family enterprise. The course helps participants understand the complexities of family-owned businesses, providing tools to foster collaboration, manage family dynamics, and address common issues like continuity, governance, and leadership and ownership transitions. Participants will gain insights into how family relationships impact business success and learn strategies for creating structures that support long-term harmony and growth with the family and business.
The program consists of six modules delivered over the course of three sessions:
- Crafting a Family Business Legacy – Dive into the challenges and opportunities of building a resilient family business, and begin laying the foundations of your family legacy.
- Gaining a Competitive Edge – Discover how "familiness" can become your secret weapon for success with skill-based roles.
- Strategic Ownership – Leading Beyond the Business – Learn about evolving ownership responsibilities and adopting an "ownership mindset".
- Balancing Family and Business – Enhance family communication and resolve conflicts to maintain harmony and business efficiency.
- Governance for Generational Success – Explore how structured governance across family, business, and ownership ensures smooth transitions and long-term continuity.
- Working with Advisors – Tips on selecting trusted advisors and building collaborative strategic relationships.

Wendy Sage-Hayward
Senior Consultant, The Family Business Consulting Group
Wendy is the academic director at Family Enterprise Canada and a consultant at the Family Business Consulting Group. She has 25+ years of experience working with business leaders, family firms, and boards. She serves a global and diverse set of clients across the industry, facilitating meaningful conversations with multi-generational families on matters relating to firm continuity, next generation preparation, governance and, when needed, conflict resolution.

Gaia Marchisio
Senior Lecturer and Faculty Director, Global Family Enterprise Program, Columbia University
Gaia is a Senior Lecturer and Faculty Director of the Global Family Enterprise Program at Columbia Business School. With over 25 years of global experience, she supports enterprising families through research, teaching and consulting. A fourth-generation family business successor herself, Gaia works across cultures and generations to address succession, governance and continuity in family enterprise.

David C. Bentall
Founding Principal, Next Step Advisors
David is an Adjunct Professor at the Sauder School of Business with expertise in the areas of succession consulting, executive and life coaching, and a co-founder of the Business Families Centre. David is a seasoned executive and educator who brings a wealth of knowledge and first-hand experiences to family business issues.

Kathy Bright
Consultant, Trella Advisory Group
Kathy has nearly 20 years of experience supporting enterprising families as a consultant, educator, and board director. She helps families and their advisors navigate governance, succession, and continuity planning. Kathy has served on multiple family business and public boards and is a past President of Family Enterprise Canada.

Judi Cunningham
Founder, Trella Advisory Group
Judi is an expert in the field of family enterprise advising. She illuminates the significant role of families in business – highlighting their economic, community, and philanthropic contributions. Judi has been instrumental in developing world class programming for business families and designed and developed the curriculum for the Family Enterprise Advisor Program. Judi co-founded the Business Families Centre at the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia, and founded the Institute of Family Enterprise Advisors.

Ruth Steverlynck
Principal, The Lovins Group
Ruth has spent the past 15 years of her career pursuing her great passion of working alongside families where the shared hope and aspiration is for the true meaning of “wealth as well being” to be realized. She engages with individual family members, couples, siblings and families as a whole, using time-tested models and frameworks supported by meaningful learning to create the conditions where both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of significant financial resources are in balance.
