Vincent E. Didkovsky, MSc, CPA, CA, CFA, CBV, FEA, Director of Wealth Management at Newport Private Wealth
Over the course of my career I focused on developing my technical skills. I worked with numerous business owners and HNW clients and took pride in solving their tax and accounting issues. For a long time, I believed that in order to provide maximum value to clients, it was important to focus on technical solutions. At the end of the day, this is what the client was paying me for – to solve a technical problem.
A couple of years ago I realized that this “silo” approach was really missing the point. My best client engaged me to perform a tax reorganization, which would have resulted in significant tax savings for the two families engaged in the business. However, my perfectly crafted technical plan got rejected by the other family members, because they did not believe that the “patriarch” had their best interest at heart, because he never included them in this discussion. This was an eye-opening experience for me, because it was the first time in my career when my technical skills were insufficient. I realized that when I was dealing with a family business, I was focusing too much on the “business” part and neglecting the “family”. This realization was the impetus for me enrolling in the FEA program.
Upon completion of the FEA program, I am much more aware of the issues in the family circle and while I am unable to solve the issues, I can recognize when I need to engage other professionals. The program gave me the necessary tools to begin the conversation with clients about shared family vision, which would ensure that all subsequent components of a family system can then fall into place. My goal is to create, with the help from other professionals, a healthy family system that works for all members and ensures intergenerational success of the family.
